Brewin Dolphin, the largest independent private client investment manager in the UK, has increased resource in investment trust research department which will be run by investment trust specialist John Newlands.

John Moore, divisional director of the investment trust management service, said: “We’ve decided to restructure the department and bring in John for several reasons.

“Firstly we wish to increase investment in research to satisfy the changing needs of the business – feedback from our annual heads of office meeting pointed towards a hunger for enhanced market insight and coverage in this specific, growing sector.

“Secondly, the Markets in Financial Instruments Directive (MiFID) demands that research be independent of the management of investments. This is both fair and sensible, and we are keen to comply.

“To meet these needs we are bringing John on board. He is a serious and experienced professional with more than 12 years’ specialist experience and will be a huge asset to the company.”

John Newlands, as well as running his own consultancy, Newlands Fund Research, is a member of the Association of Investment Trust Companies’ Statistics Committee and has been involved in a number of industry panels. In addition to this John also wrote the definitive history of investment trust “Put not your trust in money” as well as “The History of Foreign & Colonial”.

John Newlands said: “Running my own consultancy for four years has been a fantastic experience, however the opportunity of working with a group that has around £2bn invested in investment trusts and with individuals like John Moore was too good to miss”

John Newlands will join the company on December 3, 2007. He will be supported by Alastair Harkness, who will transfer from John Moore’s team in the Edinburgh office.
